What is handled here

  • New connection — first supply, usually after first occupation
  • Transfer — change of contract holder after purchase or move
  • Termination and temporary disconnection
  • Meters — reading, verification, replacement
  • Bills — duplicates, instalments, direct debit
  • Tariff information and the social tariff for hardship cases
  • Leaks — reporting, and a rebate where a burst pipe is documented
  • Waste water — connection and charges

What to bring

  • Passport or identity card and NIE
  • Escritura, purchase contract or rental agreement
  • The last water bill or the meter number
  • IBAN for the direct debit
  • For a new connection, the licencia de primera ocupación
  • Where someone acts for you, a written authorisation

The documents required change with the rules. Current list: altea.es → Ordenanzas fiscales

Good to know

No first-occupation licence, no permanent supply. For new build the water depends on the municipal licencia de primera ocupación — plan both together.

An unnoticed burst pipe can multiply a bill. Where the repair is documented a rebate is usually possible, but the application has a deadline.

If you are away for a long period, close the stopcock but keep the contract. Reconnecting costs more than the standing charge.

Fees and charges

Water tariffs and the waste water charge are approved by the municipality and set out in the bylaws: altea.es → Ordenanzas fiscales. Current amounts are on your own bill.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tap water drinkable?

It is monitored under the applicable rules and is drinkable. It is hard water; many households nonetheless use filters or bottled water.

How often is it billed?

Periodically, by meter reading. Periods and tariffs are on the bill and are set by the municipality.

Who pays in a tenancy?

That is a matter for the tenancy agreement. If the contract stays in the owner’s name, the owner is liable to the utility regardless of any private arrangement.

What if a pipe bursts in the street?

Call Aigües d’Altea at once. Outside office hours the local police on 092 will alert the standby service.
