Good to know

112 is the only number you have to know by heart. It works from any phone, without credit and without a SIM card, and the regional control room operates in several languages, English among them.

For simple cases a report can be started online with the national police, but it must then be signed in person within a few days. Without the signature the denuncia has no effect.

Civil protection is not an authority but a municipal volunteer group. It replaces neither the police nor the ambulance service, but it is the most visible part of emergency cover at fiestas, on the beaches and during storms.

Frequently asked questions

092 or 112 — which is right?

For danger to life or health, always 112. 092 goes straight to the local police and is quicker for municipal matters.

Will they speak English on the phone?

On 112, yes — the regional control room is multilingual. On the local numbers it is not reliable.

I need a report for my insurance.

The Guardia Civil or the national police take it. Take a copy away with you; requesting one later takes time.

Can I volunteer with civil protection?

Yes, the group takes new volunteers. Contact them through the office or the town hall.
